A Activision divulgou a primeira imagem oficial do novo controle em formato de guitarra de "Guitar Hero 5", bem como alguns detalhes sobre suas funcionalidades. A nova guitarra tem corpo em vermelho e tarraxas com detalhes cromados. O preço do periférico não foi revelado.
Houve uma melhoria no campo sensível ao toque, que agora envia sinais digitais ao jogo ao invés de analógicos. De acordo com a Neversoft, responsável pelo periférico, a mudança reduz erros e atrasos na transmissão de sinal. O touchpad também recebeu marcações em revelo para facilitar a identificação pelos dedos. A "strumbar" mais resistente e com resposta mais rápida.
Entre as novidades de "Guitar Hero 5" há uma opção chamada Party Play, em que o game aceita qualquer combinação de instrumentos. Ou seja, a banda não precisa ser formada por um vocalista, guitarrista, baixista e baterista. Qualquer combinação é válida: duas guitarras e duas baterias, ou um baixo e um microfone, por exemplo. Além disso, é possível trocar de instrumento no ato, e entrar e sair da partida a qualquer momento, sem precisar se preocupar em falhar.
O game vem para Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii e PlayStation 2 que está previsto para chegar em 1º de setembro.
